Hummingbirds never seem to take a break. Other birds glide through the air, not so the hummingbird. Its wings are always in motion. This tirelessness symbolizes endurance and perseverance.
Hummingbirds perform their buzzing flight with a very high frequency of 40 to 50 wing beats per second. They can also fly sideways and even backwards. In relation to their body size, hummingbirds are probably the fastest vertebrates in the world. The Annacolibris, which are around ten centimetres tall, reach speeds of 385 body lengths per second (27.3 m/s or 98 km/h), with acceleration values of around ten times the acceleration due to gravity.
